We also started Chain React, the first React Native Conference in the world, which brings together a large chunk of our team every year. Working together in person adds color to our understanding of our coworkers.

We like using this time to collaborate on things like open-source software and Ignite 2.0, and we also cook and eat dinner, play ping pong, try out new tech like the HTC Vive (VR), battle it out on classic arcade games, and have team photo hunts. Part of maintaining our culture is our All Team Retreats or “All Treats”, where we come together and work in person for a week. You can dig more into these designations here, but suffice to say that this differentiation has saved us a lot of time and trouble. A jam is a meeting with an informal structure where a lot of information is exchanged in a stress-free way. A gig is a well-structured, well-run, organized meeting with a clear purpose and agenda. We organize our team meetings into two types, gigs and jams. In person or remote, no one appreciates a meandering, unfocused meeting - or, conversely, having all meetings be structured so rigidly that there’s not room for improvisation and important tangents. On occasions when a few people are in the same location, we still have everyone dial in separately from their computer so that everyone is equally balanced on the call. We have video call best practices that range from having everyone to be on-camera and using hand signals to helping new team members set up a home office or work location conducive to great video calls. That said, it’s deeply unnerving to be on-camera while others remain a lurking black screen. Video calls are a powerful way to do remote meetings or working sessions. Our “Kitchen Table” is a dedicated Zoom conference where anyone can drop in and keep working, just for the sense of connection and camaraderie. We use Zoom to have ongoing video chat rooms that people can drop into anytime, just like a regular room. We run a casual, optional #rollcall channel, where people can say “Good morning,” “I’m back,” “here,” etc to indicate they’re online.

With channels dedicated to casual, water-cooler-type conversation, we share what we’re reading and listening to, what we’re eating, and even what errands we’re running - which doubles as a head’s up for why we’ll be offline for an hour or two. Using digital tools for connection as well as for work. To foster a sense of community and connection, we’ve developed a slew of best practices: 1. (No more meetings with most of a team sitting in person while a few remote people on the phone can’t or don’t fully participate!)
From the CEO to our most recent hire, everyone is on a level playing field with one other. Core to our culture is that our entire team is remote. We hold weekly meetings at the ‘Kitchen Table’ (see below), play Rocket League at lunch, spend a week together every year at our ‘All Treat’, and work together closely on our projects.Īs with pretty much everything else, our culture is intentionally created. As a distributed company spread from Portland down to San Francisco over to New Orleans, our team is still very tight-knit.
